SEO – What is it?
Any of you that have published a website online will no doubt have heard about SEO. But apart from it meaning Search Engine Optimisation, what does it actually mean for us as webmasters? In a nutshell, it is…
a practise that is employed to increase the visibility of your website through the use of methods and theories that have developed over the years to ensure high rankings within search engines.
Phew! That was a mouthfull. Let’s break this down so that we can fully understand what is actually involved.
Visibility & High Rankings
Obviously if you have published a website you will want people to know that it’s there and visit – especially if you are relying on earning money through advertising on the site, increasing income for a business, etc. High ranking is easy to understand. When you do a search for a website, those at the beginning of the results are high ranking websites and therefore, in turn, obtain a high level of visibility.
Don’t panic though. There is no guarantee that these webmasters have developed the perfect strategy to be in the top ten results. Sometimes it can be down to luck or even because there is no decent competition for that particular search subject. And just because a large company can employ SEO experts does not mean that they can reach number one in the results either.
Methods & Theories
These are used on your website to help increase your ranking. Why do I use the word theories? That’s purely because there is no absolute, 100% guarantee that these work. Search engines play their cards very close to their chest and so no-one can ensure that something definately works. Saying that, there are those practises which are classed as methods as they are considered to have a positive effect on improving visibility because they have been used for years and are now thought of as the foundation of search engine optimisation. Obviously these methods and theories are not written in stone and are only guidelines towards how to implement search engine optimisation for your website.
