Additional Plugins

I previously talked about the theme and plugins that I was using on my project website. I thought I would do this update as I have added four additional WordPress plugins. You may be thinking that I am using a lot of plugins, but it’s not that many really. The majority of them, once set-up are automated and you don’t really have to worry about them. For example, the HTML Javascript Adder and Spam-Stopper plugins need no interference at all.

Comment Email Verification
This plugin ensures that people who write comments verify their email address before the comment is displayed. This is good for stopping people automatically spamming your posts.

Google Plus One
I have used this to place the button in the sidebar allowing people to ‘like’ website. This help increase Search Engine Optimisation by allowing visitors to advertise your own site!

Google Custom Search
This is self-explanatory. Rather than have the basic WordPress search facility, it is better to use Google Search – for obvious reasons. This link doesn’t take you to the actual plugin, rather it is an explanation with a video of how to include this on your website. Thanks goes out to tipsandtricks.hq.com for having such a useful ‘how to’.

Simple Sitemap
Having a sitemap on your site is a very good idea when it comes to SEO. It is automatic – just create a page for it to be displayed then you can leave it. A sitemap is just a list of all the posts and pages that are on your site. This is especially useful if, for some reason, a link is broken on another part of the site.

WP Polls
Polls enable you to improve the interactivity of your site. People like to feel that they have been thought of (which should be your main concern anyway). It is also good for finding out information about what people like. If all visitors are interested in Sci-fi then it would be best to stick to that area when reviewing films. Or you may wish to increase other categories to reach a larger audience. The choice is entirely up to you.

In the next part of the project

Now that we have the theme and plugins installed it is time to move onto creating posts about your movies. I will go into this on the next post. How to create them, what to look out for and what will help increase your SEO increasing the chance of more visitors.

WordPress, Plugins & Themes

In my last article which has started this series on how to generate an income from your website I talked about what I was trying to achieve. This article will be talking about the plug-ins and theme that I am using on my site.

The Theme

Again, I think it is worth mentioning again that my design skills are not as good as I would like them to be so I decided to use a free theme to take the labour out of designing one from scratch. I came across a theme called ‘Shades of Blue’ from StudioPress which is a simple yet professional looking theme. I did change the background and created a simple logo to make it a bit more unique to my site only – and that’s it!

The Plugins

Running WordPress without any plugins installed is not recommended in my own opinion. Yes, WordPress is perfectly happy running without any and is secure enough but you don’t get to use it to its full potential. So here is the list of plugins that I feel are going to be useful to me:

          All Related Posts
I have this as a sidebar widget. It works by displaying a list of other posts which contain similar tags and categories.

          Amazon Product in a Post
This is self explanatory. It allows me to just obtain the product code and insert it using a simple piece of code -
[AMAZONPRODUCT=B000000000] – and it will display in your post. The good thing about this particular plugin is that
with a bit of CSS knowledge you can change the standard layout as much as you wish.

          Better AdSense Targeting
This plug-in tells AdSense which areas of your site to look at when considering ads for your site. I have restricted
this to just the header and the content. If I have anything inside a post which I don’t want used (for example I have
some code for rating that I don’t want taken into account) I can use the [/ingore] tag. This is extremely useful for
ensuring AdSense shows ads which are more related to my site.

          HTML Javascript Adder
Being able to put HTML, Javascript and Flash anywhere on your site easily is a definite bonus and this plugin allows
you to do this. It also lets you use shortcodes in widgets which is what I intend to use it for in association with the
          Amazon plugin’s shortcode.

          kk Star Ratings
As we all know film reviews are useful up to a point – they are one person’s view of that particular film which is good
if you have similar tastes, but this is generally not so. kk Star Ratings displays a 5 star rating system and allows
visitors to simply click their own rating for the film. Offering visitors some form of quick, simple way to interact with
your site is nothing but beneficial.

          Platinum SEO Pack
Get this plugin. If there was ever a plugin that you cannot do without, this one is it! Please visit the plug-in site as
this is a serious powerhouse that you do not want to leave out. The first two features mentioned on their site are
that it optimises post and page titles for search engines and generates all SEO relevant META tags automatically!

          Slick Contact Form
This was a good find for me. I was actually looking for a contact form which I could just throw into a page and link
from the main page, but this goes one better! You get a little floating tab which you can place wherever you wish
which once clicked, slides open to a contact form! No need for additional pages, can be personalised easily through
CSS and works well with my site.

          Spam-Stopper
Ah, spam. You will NOT be able to run a site without getting people trying to spam the comments section. Whilst
Akismet (which comes installed by default – do not turn it off!) will catch nearly every spam message due to
continual updates, you can stop ‘bot-generated’ comments by using this plugin. It allows you to set up a simple
question which must be answered before a comment can be posted. This seriously does reduce the amount of spam
you get a lot! I use it on this site too!

          WP Email Guard
This is an ‘install and leave’ plugin. There are no settings to worry about. What it does is convert all mentions of
your email address to JavaScript code which stops people scraping your site and finding out your email address. The
good thing is that it is still visible and click-able for your visitors.

          WP Socializer
This is a very feature-full plugin. In it’s basic form, it allows you to display like/+ buttons for the social sites that you
decide to display. It’s a nice way to ensure they look uniform and professional without too much messing about. I
would recommend spending some time on this plugin to ensure you get it right. It does have ‘templates’ ready made
          which makes it easier.

And that’s it for the plugins that I have so far. If I add any more I will write about them. I would like a Twitter plugin which will post to Twitter when a new post is created but I have not found one that is not impossible to set up (so if anyone has any suggestions, I would be happy to hear them!).

If you have any questions about anything I have talked about so far, please feel free to let me know and I will try and answer them as best I can.

Can I generate an income from a website?

I was thinking last week that unless there is a global conspiracy against me, I should be able to start a website and build up an income. But how do I really go about doing it? What sort of income can I expect? How long will it take? Will I have to become a professional web designer and SEO’er?

Over the coming weeks I will be posting regular articles on various subjects relating to this particular subject right from the beginning.

The Proposal

I will be creating a website allowing me to generate an income and documenting the journey here, on Thumoo. I will not be linking directly to the site and will not even mention the name of the website as I want to minimise any potential advertising which would come through from here. So the website will be treated as if it was the only website project I am concentrating on. I will however, be talking about the content as this will be unavoidable. This will make any statistics that I show to be as accurate as I can possibly make them.

I am also going to avoid the “keyword jig” – the website name will not contain any keywords. Let’s face it, Rotten Tomatoes has nothing to do with the actual content of the site (it’s a movie site for those who didn’t know).

Throughout the articles I will be making assumptions here and there. This is not at all to try and confuse anyone, just to skip over certain parts which I feel don’t need covering. However if I am asked to cover any particular area I will be more than happy to dedicate an article and some time to helping my readers.

The Website

The idea for the site is something that I have been contemplating for some time but never put into action until now. I already have a domain name (which I purchased at GoDaddy) and I have my hosting with HostGator. I won’t be going through how to do this part unless I am asked to.

The Design

First off I will just say that I do not have any design skills. At all! I do know what works and what doesn’t and what I do and do not like. This is experience that everyone has. It’s gained just by surfing the internet. Certain concepts, as well as designs, catch on and work really well. Others, well, don’t.

So without any design skills how am I going to achieve my goal?

I sat down and just wrote down the sort of things I wanted the site to contain. Was it going to be advertisement central? Or was I going to complement content with a few ads? Well from knowing a little about SEO (and some common sense) I decided to go with concentrating on content and just allow ads a part on my site. I use the word ‘allow’ as it is strongly recommended in web design to concentrate on the content with regard to the layout, but you must remember that ads are a part of your website and not just an addition.

This site is going to be film related. This will include reviews of films, links to Amazon together with a little AdSense. Knowing this I now had a rough idea in my head of what it could be laid out like. I then had a choice which was decided very quickly – design a site from scratch or use a package – designing a site from scratch that has to keep up with modern design and development can be a very harrowing experience even for the strong hearted (I am struggling with this on another site). So I decided on a package. I could have gone with a CMS such as Mambo but I decided WordPress is powerful enough to begin my venture. The support community is very large and any problems can be quickly and easily rectified.

So I now have my website, hosting and WordPress is installed. I also have a rough idea of what the design and content will be. In the next article I will be talking about WordPress plugins and themes.

Is there a shop in your town or city that you walk past frequently but very rarely go into? And when you do, you just browse and not buy anything? Well this is like some websites out there and it could also be yours!

It would be nice to have visitors who come back on a regular basis making you feel like all your hard work was worthwhile. You can if you:

Keep your site up-to-date

Make it interesting

Ensure it is user-friendly

Using metrics can be very helpful in giving you an idea of what kind of visitors are coming to your site and how this can be improved upon to ensure that you get repeat visitors. After all, repeat visitors means more sales and better visibility, helping your popularity and ranking in the search engines.

Google Analytics

This is perhaps the most used and common way to find out what is happening on your site. The features that this facility holds is immense and can be a bit daunting but you can keep it simple at first by looking at the basic data to begin with.

When you first sign in, you will see your overview. This gives just a list of your websites and some basic information about your visitors. This information is certainly not useful as it does not show what type of visitors you are getting or even whether they are human or just spiders/bots.

Clicking on your website name will take you to a screen allowing you to view your report.

Dashboard

The information shown on this page is pretty much self-explanatory and can be quite useful for giving you an instant view of who your visitors are, where they are coming from and which pages are the most popular.

The metrics shown are defined by the date range and this can be changed by clicking on the date in the top right-hand corner and the metrics change accordingly. The graph shows these visitors in graph form (not many in this example!). Then follows the site usage. On here you can see there is a bounce rate of just over 52%. This may seem bad, but for the site in this example all new content is shown on the first page and so return visitors are unlikely to click further as they would have already seen the content.

The bounce rate is visitors that visit the site and leave afterwards without viewing other pages

Based on the average time on the site – 7 minutes and 40 seconds – I can see that the visitors are in fact interested in the content. If this was just a few seconds then I would be worried and consider changing the site to improve the ‘staying power’.

Visitors overview shows us here that there have been a total of 31 visitors and taking this into account with the 76 visits, we can see that we have return visitors. Hurrah! Then we have the map overlay. As this is a global site, I personally am not to interested in this but if you are running a website that where you wish your demographics to come from a particular country this will give an indication whether you need to change your keywords to better gain these ‘local’ visitors.

Traffic sources overview shows where traffic is coming from through the internet. As you can see there is 39% of traffic coming from search engines. Good. This proves to me that my site is listed and people are finding it based on relevant keywords that I am using.

Finally we have the content overview. I can see here that the largest proportion of page views (a whopping 61%) is just on the home page. This is acceptable for this site as, mentioned above, all the new content is on this page.

The Basics

All-in-all this is just the basics of what Google Analytics can show us and the metrics go much, much deeper and it can feel like you are Alice falling through the rabbit hole. But bear with it and just have a look around. Google is very good with its help and there are many articles online explaining what most of the analysis means.

Everyone has an opinion whether they be positive or not. But it can be hard to get visitors to your site to leave a comment. So how do you get these important comments?

Number Of Articles

The more articles on your site, the more likely it is that you will get responses. Regular submissions will bring back visitors to your site and these people are more likely to give their views. This will, in turn, improve the chances of new visitors to become regular and leave comments.

Comments Are Good

All comments should be accepted providing they have useful content to them. Spam comments must be removed as visitors will not want to scroll through masses of irrelevant views to find something interesting. Even if a comment is negative, these should be taken on board.

Respond

Visitors who leave comments like feeling important and needed. This is why it is a good idea to respond to their opinions in a professional way. It would be nice to receive all positive comments but this is just not going to happen.

Even a bad review is a good review…

So what must you do when you receive a negative view? Ignoring it will ensure that your readers think you are biased so it is a good idea to answer these. Just ensure that you are professional and courteous in all your replies. And if you think about it, even a bad review is a good review! You can learn from it and improve your site. Remember not to get into a flame war.

Visitors to your site will have their opinions and will be happy to share them if you ask. This is a great way to gain an insight into every aspect of your site and could be considered a form of metrics which can be “analysed” to improve your article submissions.

Ask For Comments

Really! There is nothing wrong with asking visitors to leave a reply to your articles. It has been mentioned time and again in other articles that the number of responses increase if you ask at the end of your article. If you are writing a short article then you can quite easily ask anywhere throughout the post. It shows that you care

Ask Open Questions

This is similar to the tip above. The difference is for articles where you want to find out visitors specific views. Perhaps there is information that you wish to know and would like some help.

Unique Articles

This is probably the most talked about and important aspect of article writing when it comes to search engine optimisation. Visitors do not want to find that they have started reading an article that they have read on another site.

Not Too Long

As mentioned above, asking open questions is a good idea but if you are asking which requires a response, don’t make the article too long. Remember, you are not writing a thesis! Unless of course you are!

Comment yourself

Commenting on articles in other blogs which are similar in content to your own will let the owners know that you are serious about what you are doing and will be more willing to leave comments on your own blog. This can also lead to linking.

Now I am going to ask for comments. What are your views on the above tips? Do you have any extra ones yourself? If I get enough new tips then I will write another article in addition to this one.

When considering external links one has to take into account Search Engine Optimisation. Reading this post it may seem like common sense, but it is good to keep this sort of thing in mind when you are creating these links. When search engines crawl your site, as you know, they ‘read’ the text on your page to see what the content is about so they can reference you correctly in the SERPs. This can be beneficial if done correctly and damaging if not. Spending some time thinking about what sites you want to link to will help ensure your site will get the best chance in moving up through the rankings.

Non-Related Websites

If a search engine comes across a link which has a keyword, phrase or link to a non-related site – for example a site about pens should avoid links to sites about films (unless necessary), the search engines could rank you down for this or even worse consider your site to be spam and do this too many times and you’ll soon see your site disappear altogether.

It is also wise to keep away from spam sites. You know these. They are the ones that are created just for gaining an income and you can tell these sites as they are full of advertising and not much content.

Related Websites

Search engines like links to related sites. If you are giving instructions for how to use a smartphone it will be considered good if you link to a site which deals with the underlying technology or applications that you can get.

Tips

Don’t repeat yourself

Don’t use the word ‘pens’ all the way through the website and then link using the anchor text ‘pens’. See the next tip.

Try to be original

Keeping with the ‘pens’ example, you could use ‘felt tips’ or ‘fountain pens’ as your anchor text. This is increasing your keywords and broadening your site keywords coverage.

Do not use invisible keywords

Here I don’t mean create a link with the same colour as your background. What I class as invisible words are ‘click here’ and ‘link’ among others. The search engines will consider these to be keywords. As you are using them for links to external sites there will be more weighting on these words.

Use Phrases

Sometimes it can be helpful to use phrases rather than just one or two words. With ‘pens’ you could use ‘a range of ballpoint pens’. Search engines and people will read this and know what the linked site is about.

Use Your Link’s Titles

If you are linking to an article externally (or even internally), you can use the title of the article. This is good if you are linking to a popular site as they have probably spend time coming up with the title to include relevant keywords and it would be helpful to both them and yourself to use this.

Keep The Number Of Links Below 100

This is just a guide of course and includes every link throughout your site. Seomoz has an article which talks about number of links and whether 100 is too many.

I’m sure you have heard of Google+ the new, shiny social networking site. The number of users signing up is increasing at a geometric rate so I thought it would be interesting to find some (very) simple statistics to see how it compares with other social networking sites.

I have decided to just stick with Google+, Facebook, Twitter, Myspace and LinkedIn as these are well-known and are best used to get a grasp of the numbers involved. Below is a bar chart showing the number of users using the mentioned social networking sites.

As you can see there are nowhere near the number of users for Google+ as there are for Facebook, but I found this article which talks about the increase in users expected over the next few days.

Twitter – How Many Users Does Twitter REALLY Have?

Facebook – Facebook’s own statistics

Obviously these figures must be taken with a pinch of salt as there is much more detailed information available. There are those users who are signed up and don’t use the social sites, those that use them several times a day and everything in between.

I wouldn’t like to make a prediction of whether Google+ will be a complete success like Facebook or Twitter or if it will fail as I feel it is still too early to tell. But it is interesting that this early on it is not just SEO professionals that are signing up but those users that are treating Google+ as a real alternative to Facebook.

I welcome comments and will be interested to hear people’s views on the success or failure of Google+.

User experience has become very important on the internet, but I predict that it will become even more important over the next year. This is paramount for you as web designers and developers to think about and implement to keep ahead in your field and ensure that you are not left behind and losing clients.

So what is this User Experience subject all about?

The simple answer is how the user actually uses your site and whether it is easy and enjoyable for them enough to return and recommend to others. On a more technical plane, this is to do with HCI(Human-Computer Interaction) or, more specifically HWI (Human-Website Interaction).

But what does this actually mean?

To quote from Wikipedia, UX (User eXperience) is;

a person’s perceptions of the practical aspects such as utility, ease of use and efficiency of the system

Okay, that was a bit heavy, but it just means that the system, or in your case your website, should be quick, easy to use and offer the facilities that they expect from visiting your site. If visitors are looking to buy a book and end up on a site which takes five minutes to load, has hundreds of links and all they can see is information on how to stuff your turkey at Christmas then this is not very good UX.

You may be thinking that this is very subjective, and you would be right. It is! So how can you possibly get it right? You need to be empathetic to your potential visitors. But this is not always easy and can certainly take time to achieve. This is probably made harder by the fact that you do not have any experience of training in UX, right? So how do you get it right? You ask the people who are going to be visiting your site. Asking people for their opinions on your design is a great way to begin to mould your site so that it is user friendly. Also, people are very happy to give their views and appreciate the chance to help out.

The best place to get this kind of feedback is from web designer forums. These are frequented by designers and developers who have qualifications and/or experience in what works and what does not and can offer constructive critisism to aid in your sites development. Obviously not all feedback will be constructive, but you have to just take on all comments and suggestions with a pinch of salt. I’m not saying to go and get comments and then ignore them, but no one person is going to be right. However, those who have been in the web development industry any decent length of time will have a good grasp on what does and does not work and these people will generally be the ones to offer the impartial advice.

Another way to find out about what does and does not work in relation to UX and your website is to look at, and use, other websites. Look at them with bias, not prejudice – what do YOU like about the site? Do YOU find it easy to use? Does everything on the site do what YOU expect it to do? Why am I emphasising on the ‘you’? Because your the one they have designed the website for. This is an excellent way to be empathetic – you are seeing their website from your point of view, a user. You can pick up some excellent tips and ideas by doing this.

Look at the professional websites too. Do not be tempted to copy them exactly, but they have been designed with large budgets and professionals in the web development field. These designs have been proven to work and you could do worse than to take some of your experience of these sites and use them in your own designs. This is not just about the layout and whether it is easy to use. This is also about colour and imagery. The user wants to feel how they expect to feel when they visit your site. Did you notice how I did not say ‘comfortable’ or ‘welcomed’ or any of those warm, fuzzy words? That’s because it is the experience you are after! If you have a website which is about horror films and zombies and want to scare the living daylights out of your visitors then you probably wouldn’t want to design it with pastel colours, nicely curved boxes and fluffy clouds drifting by – unless that’s part of your plan.

This is a very large subject area and there are those that specialise purely in UX and nothing else, but it is becoming more and more important for the designers and developers themselves to have a general understanding too. If you are interested in learning more, then one book that I would recommend to obtain is Designing Interactive Systems: A Comprehensive Guide to HCI and Interaction Design by David Benyon which will give you a good grounding in UX and HCI in both the real world and for websites.

In this article I recommended…

There’s more than one way to skin a cat…

In the world of the internet there are two era’s. BG and AG – Before Google and After Google. I’m sure that everyone is aware of the major shift in how the internet has been perceived since Google jumped into our lives and even into the English dictionary! But there is a life outside of Google. Okay, we can all get on more than happily just standing under the Google umbrella, but there are other search engines out there and to just ignore them would (in my opinion anyway) be bad SEO.

But why should be bother with other search engines if we can do everything with Google? That question is easy to answer: they do not own 100% of the market. If they did then there would be no need for articles like this. So how much of the market do they actually own? Quite a lot, but not all of it. To give you an idea, I hunted around the internet and took figures from all over the place and worked out an average of the market share that the top search engines own. I felt this had to be done as no one seemed to agree on figures for any particular time period, although there was not a major difference between them. So below is a pie chart so you can see how the different search engines stand up to each other:

As can be seen, Google certainly takes up the majority of the market but still about 14% away from total market share. So does this really matter? Well this all depends on what you are attempting to achieve. If you are only interested in gaining readers (for example a blog such as this one) then sticking with only one search engine will probably do you just fine. Unless you are studying SEO of course! But if you speak to anyone who runs a business and ask if they would like to potentially increase their sales by 14%, they will probably bite your hand off. Let me give you an example:

SomeCompany Inc sells cards for all occasions globally. You can go onto their website and design your own cards to be sent to friends and loved ones in any country in the world. Now, currently they are only concentrating their efforts with the Big G and their current turnover is £1,000,000 per annum. Then they find out that they can gain this magical extra percentage in sales. This equates to a potential extra turnover of £140,000 a year! Certainly something not to be sniffed at and as I mentioned above, any business worth their salt will ensure that they get this extra business.

The numbers are in the engines

However, before you go rushing out to spend all this time ensuring you are mentioned in all the other search engines – which will no doubt take a long time – you have to consider that this 14% in only a potential increase and actual figures will not reflect exactly this. Also you can sit there and get a nice glowing feeling inside knowing that the other search engines probably have you listed already if you have a fairly long standing site. There are no exact time frames to how long this takes, but most engines out there will quote between a few weeks and a few months.

Where am I?

Whilst writing this I attempted to find some way (bar going through my visitor logs) of seeing if my own blog is listed with a particular search engine; in my case Ask.com. I could not find anything myself, but if there is anyone out there that knows a place where this can be done, please let me know! To be safe though, there is nothing wrong with submitting your site to the search engines (even Google does not mind you submitting a site even if it has been crawled). There are companies out there that offer free search engine submission which allow you to submit to multiple sites, but please beware! There are those that are not as good as others – make sure you read the small print and nothing nasty is going to come back and bite you. Link farms and email lists are one sure way of getting into trouble with both the search engine and your email inbox!

I thought it might be an interesting topic to carry on from the previous one on Keyword Searches and talk about how websites got to be where they are in the search listings.

The SEO Cauldron

Throw in the correct ingredients and you will get a nice spell which you can use on the search engines to obtain high rankings (where a website is listed in the many thousands of results). Likewise, using the wrong ingredients and you risk disappointment and no one ever seeing your website from a search engine.

It is worth noting at this point that search engines, although very important in the SEO world, are not the be-all and end-all of marketing your website.

Content is King

This is perhaps the whole purpose of having a website. Without content you just have advertising; and who wants to view a website that it nothing but advertising? No one. So having content is good. However, not just any content will do.

Informative

People do want to know about the subject they have been looking for. As with the Jack Russell example in the last post, , if you have a website that just says that Jack Russells are dogs, then you are not being very informative. The majority of people know this already.

Interesting

So you have your content, but unless it is interesting then people will immediately be put off and hit the back button to view another site. Yes. I have gone away from the search engine talk for a moment for a good reason. If it is interesting, people will stay longer on your site. The longer they stay on your site and the more pages they visit, the better it is for your rankings (Apparently. This is strongly considered to be true, but there is no definitive proof that it works).

Easy to read

This is about using a language that is suitable. It is also ensuring you are using the correct fonts and colours. You don’t have to have perfect grammer or punctuation – people will let this go, but at least check your spelling. Also, people will not want to read a whole article which has been designed with ‘comic sans’ in red on a blue background. Again it comes down to ensuring the visitor stays on your site as long as possible. Your design does not have to be perfect! Have a look around and see what other sites are doing. Sticking with the crowd on this one is not a bad thing – just try to keep it original too.

Original

How many times have you visited a website only to find that you read the same article on a previous one? There are two reasons for this. Firstly it is just someone copying and pasting the article from another site. Search engines know this! They take into account the date that it was created, therefore the original poster will get the credit when it comes to rankings. Secondly is that the article has been written for a site dedicated to free articles and more than one person has used it. There is nothing wrong with this, it is totally legal but keeping it original and written by your fair keyboarding skills will be more likely to result in more rankings and visitors.

So ensure that you write the content for your visitors (the human ones) and not for the search engines and ‘bots’. Yes it’s nice to have top rankings, but if you want to keep your visitors then you will have to do better than just bowing down to the powers that be. Also, as mentioned in the previous article;

More and more people are beginning to use ‘human’ requests (as in the last example) and the results will become more and more relevant to you as a surfer.

So having your content written for the person rather than the search engine will become more and more important. There are many, many websites out there that already do this, but follow the above and you will soon be up there with the big boys!
